The March 2021 launch of sports betting in the state put it somewhere around the median timeline for U.S. states to offer the new form of gambling.
But there was a catch - and it was a big one. For the next 16 months, the only way to participate in such gambling was at the Harrah's tribal casinos in Cherokee and Murphy - which happen to be roughly three hours and four hours west of Charlotte, the state's largest city, respectively. In fact, none of the state's 10 most populated cities are located within a reasonable day-trip distance. It's likely that the vast majority of North Carolinians were not even aware of this rather impractical legal sports betting option in the far west corner of the state.
The situation improved somewhat with the opening of the Catawba Two Kings Casino sportsbook in Kings Mountain in September 2022, since that site is a much more manageable 40 minutes or so west of Charlotte. But it would be almost 18 more months before North Carolina moved into the modern era with mobile sports betting being launched.
Best Online Sportsbooks in North Carolina
While North Carolina gaming regulators do not release market share statistics, usual top leaders like FanDuel dominate in every state that does so. The total of eight mobile sportsbooks is below the national average, but the biggest players - also including traditional casino operators like Caesars as well as relative newcomers ESPN and Fanatics - all have set up shop in the state.
Each sportsbook has its own welcome bonus, retail partner, and betting markets to choose from. Below are a couple of popular options that might be worth checking out.
| Sportsbook | Retail partners | Welcome bonus | Popular markets | Link to review |
| Caesars | Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort and Harrah's Cherokee Valley River Casino & Hotel | The welcome bonus varies by state | Moneylines, point spreads, totals | Caesars Sportsbook review |
| Fanatics | Carolina Hurricanes | Bet $5 get $200 FanCash | Player props, live betting | Fanatics Sportsbook review |
| FanDuel | PGA Tour and the Carolina Panthers | Bet $5 and get $300 in bonus bets if your bet wins | Same-game parlays, moneylines, teasers, futures, partial-game odds, prop bets, point spreads, live bets, and over/unders | FanDuel Sportsbook review |

Types of Sportsbook Bonuses in NC
North Carolina has a ton of bonuses to help players build their bankroll and develop familiarity with the platform. The most common bonuses come via first-bet offers, where you can get bonus bets for wagering a certain amount -- or even if your first bet loses, also called loss insurance. Sometimes, it may require a code to use for the best NC sportsbook promos, so make sure you have the correct one when signing up.
Types of Bets Available at NC Sportsbooks
There are a wide variety of bet types that are allowed at NC sportsbooks. Luckily, I know these bet types like the back of my hand, but I'll explain them a bit, so you understand just as well as I do.
Moneyline Bets
The simplest type of betting, only needing to pick the outright winner of the game. If the Carolina Panthers are -130 favorites on the moneyline, I will need to place a wager of $130 to earn $100 from winning bet. However, if the Panthers were +130 underdogs, I could place a $100 bet to potentially win $130.
Point Spread Bets
Point-spread bets put things right down the middle for the bettor and the best NC betting sites. If the Duke Blue Devils were favored by 7.5 points over the North Carolina Tar Heels, and won the game by 8+ points, Duke would have covered the spread and won the bet. However, if the Blue Devils only won by seven points or less (or lost outright), they will have lost the bet.
Totals (Over/Under)
Bets on the total, or over/under, focus on the combined score by both teams. If the Carolina Hurricanes vs. Florida Panthers game had a total of 5.5 goals, 6+ goals would need to be scored for over bettors to win, while five goals or fewer would be needed for the under bettors.
Prop Bets
Prop bets are designed for statistics, whether that be for a player or team. These bets would range from anything like whether LaMelo Ball makes over/under 2.5 3-pointers in a game, or whether the Charlotte Hornets score over/under 105.5 points as a team.
Parlays and Same Game Parlays
Parlays and Same Game Parlays have quickly become one of the most popular options on North Carolina betting apps - because that's where the biggest payouts are! A typical parlay could look something like the Blue Devils, Hornets, and Panthers all winning their respective games, while a Same Game Parlay might feature the Panthers winning outright, with Bryce Young throwing for 2+ touchdowns and rushing for 20+ yards.
Futures Bets
Futures bets are for wagers that will settle days, weeks, or even months ahead in the future. An example of a futures bet would be placing a bet on Duke in October to win the National Title in April or betting on the Hurricanes in January to win the Stanley Cup in June.

What You Can Legally Wager On in the Tar Heel State
Unlike many other states, North Carolina's gambling laws allow for betting on in-state university sporting events and on individual college prop betting as well. One limitation, though, is no betting on The Academy Awards, Emmys, and other awards programs.
Residents of North Carolina can bet on just about every sport imaginable, with few if any restrictions.
Popular NC Sports Teams to Bet On
North Carolina is becoming one of the fastest growing states in the country, so it's a good thing the sports here have been matching the intensity. With everything from NFL football to NHL hockey and MLS soccer, there are plenty of chances to get in on the action. A lot of people have moved to North Carolina in recent years, and now these new transplants can follow their teams and try to make a profit from the legal sports betting North Carolina offers.
Carolina Panthers (NFL)
The NFL's Carolina Panthers are the largest draw for NC online sports betting. Over 70% of all wagering is done on the NFL, and the Panthers are making it more enticing to get in on the action after winning the NFC South last season, nearly defeating the Los Angeles Rams in the playoffs. Bryce Young and Tetairoa McMillan developed a great relationship last season, making them high-profile targets for props when the new season begins.
Charlotte Hornets (NBA)
North Carolina might care more about its college basketball, but the Charlotte Hornets are becoming one of the most exciting young teams in the NBA. Led by LaMelo Ball and Kon Knueppel, the future is bright in Charlotte as the roster continues to improve. Ball is one of the top statistical leaders in the NBA, so betting on his PRA totals in games has been my one of my favorites on the best NC sportsbooks.
Carolina Hurricanes (NHL)
The NHL's Carolina Hurricanes have been the most successful pro franchise in the Tar Heel State, reaching the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in each of the last six seasons. For people who know how to bet in North Carolina, they probably already know how fun betting the coolest game on Earth is, particularly betting anytime goal scorers like Sebastian Aho and Andrei Scechnikov.
Charlotte FC (MLS)
The newest North Carolina team is MLS's Charlotte FC, which has shown gradual improvement since its inception in 2022. If you're not familiar with MLS soccer yet, this could be a good chance to try it out and see if you can try to profit from the sports betting apps NC offers. Soccer is one of the more straightforward sports to bet, so give it try and see if you can kick your way to the top.
Duke Blue Devils & UNC Tar Heels (college basketball)
One of the best rivalries in sports resides here in North Carolina, as the Duke Blue Devils and UNC Tar Heels are some of the most popular teams in the entire country. When these two teams get together, regardless of the records, anything magical can happen. Since you can bet on in-state North Carolina schools, unlike some other state's rules, you can be a part of the action when these two perennial powers clash.
NASCAR
NASCAR is incredibly popular down South, and you'll find some of the sport's most historical tracks here, including Charlotte Motor Speedway, North Wilkesboro Speedway, and Hickory Motor Speedway - the "Birthplace of NASCAR Stars." I'm not too familiar with NASCAR, but it sure is fun. There's nothing like having the winning driver on your bet slip and chugging a bottle of milk after you win. Ok, we'll skip that last part, but the rest is one helluva time.
Official Sports Teams
The NFL's Carolina Panthers, the NBA's Charlotte Hornets, and the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes are the state's major
