Modern-Day Equality? He's Not the Only Gambling Addict Now
Historically, gambling has been a man's game. From sports betting to casinos, men run the betting world. There are a ton of reasons for that, but the times, as they say, are changing. Like so many other things, women are gaining a ton of ground in the betting world.
Women are coming up big in the gambling scene
For a long time, gambling has been very male-centric. It still technically is, though not by much. It is a risky endeavor that males tend to prefer. It's viewed as macho, which is part of why so many picked up the habit. At its best, it's a money-making endeavor, and though it's 2026, men still often feel like the primary financial providers (and sometimes are) in their lives and homes.
Men still like gambling more than women. There's an inherent risk factor that men aren't as worried about, which extends to life in general. Women live longer than men, and a big reason is that men do stupid things that women understand aren't worth the risk.
Men also typically have a bigger desire for control, which gambling speaks to. They are also generally more impulsive, and putting money down on something like a poker game, basketball outcome, or other event can absolutely be impulsive.
But no longer is it so heavily skewed towards men. In the 1960s and 70s, 10% of all gamblers were women. It was rare for them to get involved in such things. In their defense, there were still ideas plaguing society that women shouldn't be involved in those sorts of things or that they weren't allowed to be so independent.
As society has gotten more progressive, women have been able to take up more activities they didn't in the past. That includes gambling, because now, 46% of gamblers are women. There's been a massive shift that ironically represents society's push for equality.
Recent rise
In the last few years, the rise has been outrageous. Research indicates that the rate of women betting has almost tripled since 2022. In just sports betting, women make up almost a third of the population. Sports, long (incorrectly) viewed as a more male-centric field, has been infiltrated by gambling, and the women are going with it.
Several factors have contributed to this rise. As mentioned, women are much freer, both in their own relationships and in society at large, to do whatever they want. They also have more disposable income, which is a staple of the common gambler. Having your own money to bet with is so important, and so many women do now.
Gambling's also more widespread now. It used to be restricted to casinos in Las Vegas and other places, but now you can gamble on your phone. It's wild, but that access has allowed more women to get involved.
Plus, with pretty much every state legalizing sports betting on your phone, it's never been easier to get involved. Everyone, men, women, and sometimes even younger people who shouldn't, is betting. Women like slot machines, but that's a form of gambling.
There's even a concerted effort to market to women here. The gaming industry has really been targeting women by creating friendlier environments for them and using well-known female celebrities, like Megan Thee Stallion or Halle Berry, to advertise.
The motivations are different. Men like to gamble for competition first and foremost, but women enjoy it as an escape from their lives. It can be a way to cope with depression and other issues. Of course, with this, women with addictions are getting more and more frequent, but it is starting to finally even out between the two sexes.
