NFL Week 18 Schedule Shifts for Crucial Matchups
The NFL Week 18 slate is set, and it has been for a while. There were some matchups that hadn't been given a specific time slot, though. The league was hoping that those games, mostly divisional matchups, would be important to closing out the regular season.
Perhaps in a stroke of genius, so many of them do matter. The NFC South and AFC North remain up for grabs, and the NFC's top seed is not yet decided between two NFC West teams. Those two will face off this week. Here's everything that changed.
NFL flexes a few Week 18 games
There are two Saturday games this week, a Sunday night contest, and nothing on Monday night. The NFL 2025 regular season will conclude on Sunday with Sunday Night Football. One of the most important games of the year will be played then.
Sunday night will see the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers battle it out for the AFC North title. It's a win-and-in contest, one of two such games this week. The league opted to slot this one in because the Steelers and Ravens are perhaps more interesting teams, and this is quite the storied rivalry.
It could end up being Aaron Rodgers' last game, too. If the Steelers lose, there's no guarantee he plays next season. If they win, it'll be a potential storybook end to his NFL career, so it makes sense to put that game in this slot.
Panthers-Bucs
That leaves two other vital matchups for Saturday. First up, in the 4:30 slot, the Carolina Panthers will head south to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Barring two straight wins by the Atlanta Falcons, this game is ultimately win-and-in.
The winner will take the NFC South. If the Bucs win, they'll move to 8-9 and have the tiebreaker. If the Panthers win, they'll take the division by two games and be 9-8. Unfortunately, neither team is very good and neither seems all that interested in winning the division.
The Buccaneers have gone 1-7 in their last eight games. They've lost four in a row, including two weeks ago on the road against the Panthers. The Panthers had two chances to wrap it up and lost both: Week 15 against the New Orleans Saints and Week 17 against the Seattle Seahawks.
There's no shame in losing to the Seahawks, but the Panthers were totally uninspired and unready to play. The Buccaneers lost to the Miami Dolphins, but the Panthers let them off the hook. These two teams aren't very good, which is why they're in the least desirable slot.
Seahawks-49ers
The matchup between those Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers is much more interesting. The winner will take the NFC West crown and the NFC's top seed. It's a rematch of Week 1, which was forever ago, when a late Sam Darnold fumble cost Seattle at home.
Now, they'll need to go on the road and exact revenge. It's the second straight year Darnold has had a chance to win and get the number one seed in Week 18. Last year, the Minnesota Vikings fell thanks to an ugly Darnold outing. This year, he can continue to exorcise some of his demons.
That game will be at 8:00 pm ET. Other matchups across the NFL matter, especially for seeding. The AFC's top seed is up for grabs, and some wild-card positioning could change this week. Otherwise, though, everyone has either clinched or been eliminated, save for the two NFC South and two AFC North teams.
It's not quite the thrilling conclusion to the season the NFL might've wanted. However, having two win-and-in games is huge. Plus, a matchup for the top seed is perfect.
