Philadelphia Eagles End Long Search for Offensive Coordinator

The Philadelphia Eagles once again needed an offensive coordinator, though this time not for a good reason. If it seems like the Eagles' offense is up and down on a yearly basis, that's because it kind of is, and it's mostly due to the ever-changing offensive coordinator position.

Since Nick Sirianni took over as head coach in 2021, the Eagles have had four offensive coordinators. With the recent hiring of Sean Mannion, that number has jumped to five in the six seasons that Sirianni has led the Eagles. It's hard to find consistency that way.

Philadelphia Eagles land Sean Mannion for OC

Sean Mannion, a former star quarterback in college, has only been an assistant in the NFL for two years. However, he began to quickly rise the ranks with the Green Bay Packers, and in 2025, he was the quarterbacks coach. He helped lead Jordan Love to a really nice season, and his work there inspired the Eagles.

"It was quickly apparent in meeting with Sean that he is a bright young coach with a tremendous future ahead of him in this league. I was impressed by his systematic views on offensive football and his strategic approach," Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said in a statement via ESPN. "Sean's 11 years in the NFL have provided him a great opportunity to learn from and grow alongside some of the best coaches in the game. As a result, he has a wealth of knowledge and experience that will be invaluable to our team moving forward."

The Eagles initially went after experienced playcallers to fix the offense that struggled in 2025. However, two of their top choices, Mike McDaniel (now with the Los Angeles Chargers) and Brian Daboll (now with the Tennessee Titans), landed elsewhere. There was a long time when it felt like the Eagles were not going to find anyone.

Mannion has virtually no experience, and he's never called plays. However, he is considered a rising star in the NFL, and he has nine years of experience playing quarterback, although not as a starter. The Eagles are taking a bold swing, but it just might pan out. It might have also been their only choice.

Why the Eagles needed to nail this hire

As mentioned, the Philadelphia Eagles have been cycling through offensive coordinators. Nick Sirianni, despite being an offensive coach at heart, does not call plays and seemingly has very little to do with the on-field performance of the offense.

It all comes down to the coordinator, and sometimes, the Eagles have a good one. Sometimes, they don't. In 2021 and 2022, the Eagles had Shane Steichen. He's the only Sirianni coordinator to make it two years, but he was hired away as the Indianapolis Colts' head coach. He's had good success there.

He was replaced by Brian Johnson in 2023. Following a Super Bowl berth, the Eagles collapsed late in the season and were a first-round exit in the playoffs. Johnson was fired after his offense was a major letdown from the year before.

In came Kellen Moore. He coordinated a historic year for Saquon Barkley and a dominant season overall. The Eagles won the Super Bowl with relative ease, and Moore was understandably hired away. He's now with the New Orleans Saints.

That brought in Kevin Patullo. A first-year coordinator, Patullo struggled mightily. Unsurprisingly, he was fired after one season, but with how volatile the coordinator spot has been, people weren't lining up to interview.

Still, the Philadelphia Eagles obviously need a good coordinator. They have a good roster full of talent. Jalen Hurts, AJ Brown, Devonta Smith, and Saquon Barkley make up a great core. They just need better coaching.

Right now, Sirianni can't provide that on offense. The times they have a good coordinator, they get hired away. The other times, those coordinators are fired. Hopefully, Mannion finds a middle ground and is good but doesn't leave after one season.
