Predicting New Homes for Notable NFL QBs This Offseason

Geno Smith QB

Trade season is officially here in the NFL. Free agency begins in a week, and the NFL Draft is about a month after that. For teams without established quarterbacks or with question marks, now is the time to figure it all out. There aren't a ton of stars, but there are a handful of interesting QB options that will join the carousel this year.

Predicting where NFL QBs will go

Fernando Mendoza: Raiders

There's no chance the Las Vegas Raiders don't draft Fernando Mendoza. By a wide margin, he's the best QB in the NFL draft, and the Raiders have a need there along with the first pick. It's not rocket science for these two.

Geno Smith: Jets

When Mendoza is picked, it will mark the end for Geno Smith. He'll be traded or cut, and the New York Jets make sense as a destination. They need a bridge QB, and Justin Fields didn't work out last year. Why not take a flyer on Smith?

Ty Simpson: Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers need to draft a quarterback to develop and have for the future instead of another retread. This might be the perfect NFL draft to do that. Ty Simpson is easily QB2, but he's not close to Mendoza, so he will almost assuredly be on the board when the Steelers pick.

Kyler Murray: Dolphins

The Arizona Cardinals are set to release Kyler Murray, according to the latest reporting. They're starting over, and so is he. The Miami Dolphins are trying to move in a new direction, but their QB options are limited. They could get Murray for a couple of seasons while they try to find someone to develop.

Tua Tagovailoa: Vikings

Tua Tagovailoa will likely be released by the Dolphins. No one's going to trade for his contract. That said, he's not a bad player, and in the right system, he could thrive. The Minnesota Vikings have that system, but JJ McCarthy did not work well in it. Tagovailoa just might.

Aaron Rodgers: NFL Retirement

Aaron Rodgers is going to take months to decide and string some team along with him. With Mike Tomlin leaving the Steelers, Rodgers is not likely to re-up, even with his former coach now in tow. Rodgers is old and considered retirement strongly last year, so he should make that choice again this year.

Daniel Jones: NFL Colts

Daniel Jones is in a tough spot. He would've had a hot market if not for his Achilles tear. Now, his future is up in the air. The Indianapolis Colts want him and know he can succeed, but they won't commit as much and won't have much competition. It's a good fit, but the Achilles injury tanked his NFL free agent market.

Malik Willis: Cardinals

The Cardinals are moving on from Kyler Murray, but running it back with Jacoby Brissett for the first year with a new, offensive-minded head coach is boring. Signing the premier QB free agent and hoping an offensive coach can further unlock him, as Matt LaFleur (ironically, the brother of new Cards coach Mike LaFleur) did, is smarter, so they should sign Malik Willis.

Anthony Richardson: Rams

The Los Angeles Rams don't need a quarterback... yet. Matthew Stafford is coming back, but he's over 40. The Rams will need someone, and finding that someone sooner rather than later would be smart. It won't cost much to take a flyer on Anthony Richardson, and if anyone can mold him into an NFL QB, it's Sean McVay.

Kirk Cousins: NFL Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons just cut Kirk Cousins, but he is not likely to have a ton of interest elsewhere with how the above options will likely play out. That means he can just return to Atlanta on a one-year deal to step in for the injured Michael Penix Jr. and be much more financially viable for the Falcons.
