Rory McIlroy Returns to Augusta One Year After Emotional Triumph

Augusta National

Rory McIlroy won perhaps the most emotional golf tournament in history about one year ago. Now, he's back at the old stomping grounds. Everyone's at Augusta National this week for The Masters. Not everyone has a new perception of the hallowed ground like McIlroy.

Rory McIlroy finally returns to site of Masters win

For a long time, Augusta National was a house of horrors for Rory McIlroy. After 2014, it was the only place he still needed to conquer to enter one of golf's most prestigious and exclusive clubs: the career Grand Slam. But even before that, it had gotten the better of McIlroy in brutal ways.

That pressure began to seep into his other tournaments. After 2014, he did not win another Major until last year's Masters. He went over a decade, and some of those losses were tragically brutal, too. He missed two three-foot putts (which he'd previously made over 400 of in a row) in a collapse at the 2024 US Open.

Finally, he put together a good performance at Augusta in 2025, but it still required a playoff after McIlroy missed a birdie putt on the 18th and Justin Rose made an excellent comeback on the final Sunday. Now, he's back and can look at the greens and the fairways with new eyes.

Relaxed

Rory McIlroy probably felt immense pressure and stress as soon as he drove up Magnolia Lane every year. He was at the site that had been a major bugaboo, and he needed to win to get that monkey off his back. Too bad it's one of the toughest venues and one of the toughest fields every single year.

Now, that's definitely not the case anymore. "I feel so much more relaxed," McIlroy said. "It doesn't make me any less motivated to go out there and play well and try to win the tournament, but yeah, just more relaxed about it all."

The Irishman said last year that he felt he could win more Majors and more Masters after finally breaking the seal. Now's his chance. "I know that I can do it now," he said. "So that should make it a little easier for me to go out and play the golf I want to play."

More success at Augusta?

The Masters is the lone Major tournament that does not change venues every year. It's always at Augusta National, while the PGA Championship, US Open, and Open Championship move around. If you're struggling at the venue, there's no hope for the next year, because it's the same. But if you've had success, it can become comfortably and beneficially familiar.

"I think when you've had the experiences that I've had around here, good and bad, I think that can stand to you," McIlroy said. "I feel like I'm still young, but I'm very experienced. This is my 18th start. I do feel like I've got another hopefully 10 good shots at this. Not that I don't at the other majors, but I just think that everything here is a little more predictable. I just think the more experience you have around this golf course, the better it is."

McIlroy is no longer facing the pressure of winning. Now, it's all much more enjoyable. The public perception of him has totally shifted, at least as it comes to the Masters. The golfer is well aware of this as he makes his grand return.

"Now instead of it being 'come on, Rory, you know you can do this,' it's 'back to back!'" McIlroy said. "There's a real positive connotation to it instead of, 'geez, Rory, we've been waiting a while. When are you going to get this done?' It is so nice to walk around property or be out on the golf course and just not have that hanging over me, like it feels that it's a big weight off my shoulders."
