Tampa Bay Buccaneers Make Zac Robinson Offensive Coordinator

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have finalized a deal with Zac Robinson to be their next offensive coordinator.

Tampa’s big move comes at a critical time for the team, following a disappointing 2025 season that saw the team drop seven of its final nine games and miss the playoffs altogether.

As a rising name in NFL coaching circles, Robinson is expected to bring innovative schemes and QB expertise to a team in need of a revival. His hiring follows the dismissal of first-year coordinator Josh Grizzard after the regular season as part of a broader staff overhaul.

The Buccaneers' offense, which ranked third in the league in 2024, plummeted to 21st in total yards in 2025, with points freefalling off a cliff from 28.6 per game to just 21.4.

Robinson's hiring signals a commitment to rebuilding around key players like QB Baker Mayfield, whom Robinson has a prior connection to. During Mayfield's five-game stint with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022, Robinson served as the passing game coordinator and QB coach.

As the Buccaneers' fifth offensive coordinator in five seasons (and the fourth for Mayfield in four years), this transition could offer much-needed stability if Robinson's strategies hold true to form.

Robinson's Coaching Journey

Robinson's path to the Buccaneers' offensive coordinator role has been marked by steady progression through some of the NFL's most innovative systems. He spent time with the Los Angeles Rams, where he advanced to passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2022 and 2023 – working with Mayfield for a brief time.

Following his Rams tenure, Robinson joined the Atlanta Falcons as offensive coordinator under head coach Raheem Morris for two seasons. The Falcons achieved 8-9 records in both years, ranking 14th in total offense and 24th in scoring in 2025 amid a QB transition from Kirk Cousins to rookie Michael Penix Jr., who suffered a season-ending ACL injury.

Despite not being retained after Morris's firing, Robinson's experience in managing diverse QB situations positions him well for Tampa Bay's challenges to get a semblance of consistency.

Buccaneers' Recent Offensive Struggles

The 2025 season was a stark contrast to the Buccaneers' success in previous years. After firing Byron Leftwich following the 2022 season, the team cycled through Dave Canales in 2023 before becoming the Carolina Panthers' head coach, and Liam Coen in 2024, who departed to become the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Under Grizzard, the unit failed to maintain momentum, leading to his exit as part of Bowles' overhaul. To be fair, the Bucs had massive success under Coen the year before, but there were countless injuries all over the offense, which led to massive chaos down the stretch.

The Bucs’ downward spiral began immediately after their bye in Week 10, so the hope is that a more prepared team – particularly on offense – will be assembled this time around.

Robinson’s Potential Impact with the Bucs

Going into the 2026 season, Robinson has a very talented roster to work with. Since the Bucs missed the playoffs, they’ll have the No. 15 pick, which could potentially be used on an explosive player to bolster the offense to the next level.

Robinson's familiarity with Mayfield is certainly a plus, as the pass-heavy environments, might unlock new potentials in the team's playmakers. The Bucs do have a stud at RB, with Bucky Irving, and Rachaad White moving on – and Sean Tucker potentially doing the same. Robinson had the benefit of a two-headed monster in Atlanta with Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier, with the latter potentially being a target for Tampa.

As the NFL offseason unfolds, Robinson’s hire highlights the Bucs’ proactive approach to addressing weaknesses and banking on breakout performances. If successful, Robinson could help propel the Buccaneers back into playoff contention, marking a new chapter in their quest for consistency.
