Tiger Woods Won't Captain USA in Ryder Cup 2027
Team USA is in a bit of a rut at the Ryder Cup, but don't expect American legend and 15-time Major-winner Tiger Woods to come to the rescue. The legendary golfer is currently away from golf with no clear return date, and he's already declined the captain's role in 2027.
Tiger Woods declines captaincy
According to a report from ESPN, Tiger Woods has preemptively shared with the PGA of America that he will not take the captain's role for the next Ryder Cup. The last two captains, Zach Johnson and Keegan Bradley, were unable to guide Team USA to a win over Europe.
The fact that the PGA stated that Woods told them he wouldn't take the role suggests that he was in line for it. He's always been a candidate but hasn't ever been the captain, so the fact that it bears mentioning implies that he would have otherwise been the next captain.
He is declining because he's finally seeking treatment for his alcoholism and other issues. He recently was arrested on suspicion of a DUI after a one-car wreck, and he's been given permission to seek treatment outside the country.
Former Ryder Cup winner Paul McGinley had this to say,"A lot of people are running out of patience now, including himself and his family by all accounts from what he said yesterday. He realises the seriousness of the situation and I think it's a line in the sand. I don't think it's fair to write him off fully but it's highly improbable that he wins another tournament again, never mind a major."

PGA of America statement
The PGA of America didn't just announce that someone else would have to be captain in 2027. They also shared support for Tiger Woods. Right now, Woods is in a tough spot, and golf has somewhat united around him.
In the statement, the PGA said, "The PGA of America stands in full support of Tiger Woods as he steps away to focus on his health and well-being. During this time, we are keeping Tiger in our thoughts and prayers. Tiger has meant so much to our association and to the game of golf."
Woods has plenty of Ryder Cup experience. However, he is surprisingly just 13-21-3 overall record in eight Ryder Cup appearances (between 1997 and 2018), and he has only won in 1999. He's 4-2-2 in individual play, but he has struggled in team portions.
"We commend Tiger for prioritizing his long-term health and deeply respect the courage it takes to make such a personal decision. Tiger has shared with us that he will not serve as Captain of the 2027 U.S. Ryder Cup Team and we support his decision. The PGA of America will share further updates regarding the Ryder Cup Captaincy when appropriate," the statement concluded.
Who's next?
This all makes it clear that Keegan Bradley is not returning as captain after a tough 15-13 loss. Zach Johnson struggled even worse, so he's not going to be involved, either. Who could take over and get the Americans back on track?
Brandt Snedeker is an option, as he's the current Presidents Cup captain. He has experience in that tournament, which is very similar to the Ryder Cup. That could make him an ideal candidate to replace Bradley.
Webb Simpson is also a name to watch. He has been a member of three U.S. Ryder Cup squads, and he has a record of 4-4-1 as a player. The Americans lost those outings, but they've lost a ton of outings, so that can't be held against Simpson.
Steve Stricker, Phil Mickelson, Stewart Cink, and Justin Leonard are also options. However, Mickelson would be a difficult sell given his role in and adoration for LIV Golf.
