Tyler Shough's Rookie Rise Draws Praise from Saints Teammates

In the 2025 NFL season, few stories captured the imagination quite like that of New Orleans Saints rookie QB Tyler Shough. Drafted as a promising but unproven talent, Shough began his professional career on the sidelines, watching as Spencer Rattler took the helm to start the season.

The Saints were one of the NFL’s worst teams early on, posting a dismal 1-7 record amid offensive struggles. But midway through the year, opportunity knocked when Rattler faltered in a Week 8 blowout loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where the offense mustered had only 81 yards in halftime. Shough stepped in at halftime, sparking a turnaround that would define his rookie campaign.

Named the permanent starter the following week by head coach Kellen Moore, who praised his readiness and potential to ignite the team, Shough didn't disappoint.

Over his nine starts, he led the Saints to a four-game winning streak, showcasing poise under pressure and adaptability amid a roster ravaged by injuries and trades. Even in the season finale against the Atlanta Falcons, without star WR Chris Olave due to a blood clot, Shough relied on lesser-known targets and nearly pulled out the win.

Shough's journey to this point was forged through college stints at multiple programs, including Oregon, Texas Tech, and Louisville, which honed his maturity and versatility. Having to play with that many programs over so many years certainly prepares you for adversity – which almost every Saints QB except Drew Brees has had to endure at some point.

Teammates have been vocal about his impact, crediting his clutch performances and leadership for injecting new life into the locker room. Now we have to wonder if Shough's rapid ascent, transforming a struggling squad into one with renewed hope for the future, will be enough to keep him installed as the Saints’ starter of the future.

Shough: Scout Team to Starter

Shough's rookie year began humbly, relegated to scout-team duties while Rattler held the starting role post-training camp.  However, the Saints' early-season woes created an opening.

Moore highlighted Shough's behind-the-scenes growth, noting, "Behind the scenes, I felt like Tyler was progressing really, really well. There were a ton of growth opportunities through being a scout-team quarterback... And so as we got in the middle of the season, felt like just the way our team was playing, it felt like an opportunity to present itself."

Shough himself reflected on the experience, saying, "I think everything goes exactly how it's supposed to... I do know I have learned a lot from that time, not starting, just naturally and having learned a lot from starting."

On-Field Dominance: Stats and Standout Moments

Once inserted, Shough's stats told a story of efficiency and grit. During the four-game win streak, he threw for four touchdowns, rushed for two more, and committed just one interception.

His fourth-quarter heroics shone in three of those victories, delivering game-winning drives that flipped scripts and earned him ROY buzz.

Despite the depleted supporting cast, Shough's ability to adapt stood out. Offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier praised his maturity, attributing it to his varied college experiences that readied him for mid-season chaos.

In adversity, like bouncing back from interceptions, Shough demonstrated resilience, as seen in the Falcons game where he nearly drove the team to victory after a detrimental interception late in the fourth quarter of the loss in the Saints’ season finale.

Locker Room Love: Teammates Rally Behind Their Rookie QB

Shough's teammates have been effusive in their support, recognizing his role in revitalizing the Saints.

Olave, the team’s top wideout, lauded his clutch gene: "When the moment comes, you've got to make a play. And he's done that every single time. He delivered every single time this year... He's a winner, what I've seen. So I can't wait to build around this."

DE Cam Jordan, an eight-time Pro Bowler, affirmed Shough's QB1 status, praising his growth: "Absolutely... He showed the last eight or nine games, he grew every game. And even showed that he has an edge to him with adversity... There was times you saw how special he could be with his feet but his playmaking ability to be able to shrug off some of these would-be sacks and then have amazing throws after."

This camaraderie highlights Shough's ability to earn respect quickly, fostering a unified front as the Saints eye brighter days ahead.
