USF QB Byrum Brown Transfers to Auburn for 2026 CFB Season

In a move that has sent shockwaves through college football, former University of South Florida (USF) quarterback Byrum Brown announced his commitment to Auburn on Tuesday. The dual-threat signal-caller, known for his explosive playmaking ability, first made the choice to enter the transfer portal with one year of eligibility remaining back in December.

Brown's decision follows the recent hiring of his former USF head coach, Alex Golesh, at Auburn, marking a reunion that could revitalize the Tigers' struggling offense. Since 2019, the school hasn't placed higher than 68th in scoring offense.

Brown, with his proven track record of high-yardage performances, is poised to be that catalyst, bringing a dynamic style that aligns perfectly with Golesh's up-tempo scheme.

The announcement, made via Brown's personal X account and confirmed by On3 Sports, has already generated buzz about his potential NIL deal, projected as one of the most lucrative in the era.

Byrum Brown's Decorated Career at USF

Brown's tenure at USF was nothing short of remarkable, establishing him as one of the most productive QBs in the American Athletic Conference. Starting for three seasons, he transformed the Bulls' offense under Golesh's guidance.

In 2023, as a sophomore, Brown threw for 3,292 yards and 26 touchdowns while adding 809 rushing yards and 11 scores on the ground. The following season, Brown suffered a lower leg injury that sidelined him for several games.

However, the Bulls went 9-3 during the regular season in their most recent campaign, the program's best win total in eight years. USF did suffer a 24-10 defeat in the StaffDNA Cure Bowl, but Brown did not suit up for the game.

Brown just had his best season as a Bull in 2025, throwing for 3,158 yards and 28 touchdowns, while contributing 1,008 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground. Needless to say, the Tigers are getting a guy in the peak of his career.

Reuniting with Coach Alex Golesh

The coach-quarterback connection was certainly at the heart of Brown's transfer. Golesh, who revitalized USF's program, was hired by Auburn on Nov. 30 to inject new life into the Tigers. Golesh's offensive philosophy of a fast tempo, RPOs, and quarterback mobility perfectly suits Brown's skill set. Their prior success together at USF, where Brown thrived as the centerpiece, appears like it will be a seamless transition.

Golesh's move to Auburn was driven by the opportunity to build in the SEC, and securing Brown early in the portal cycle is a major coup. This reunion not only bolsters the QB room but also aids in recruiting, as prospects see a proven signal-caller that can win them some ball games.

"It's about familiarity and trust," Golesh noted in a recent interview, highlighting how Brown's understanding of the system could accelerate Auburn's rebuild.

Expectations for Brown & Golesh at Auburn

Looking ahead to the 2026 season, Brown is expected to step in as Auburn's starter, providing stability and excitement. The Tigers' offense, plagued by inefficiency, could see a dramatic uptick in production with Brown's versatility.

Analysts predict he could push Auburn toward a Top-25 scoring unit, especially with returning talent on the line and at skill positions.

Beyond stats, Brown's leadership and NIL appeal could galvanize the fanbase and program. Challenges remain, including adapting to SEC powerhouses, but his track record suggests he's up to the task. If Brown delivers, Auburn might contend for a big-time bowl game or more, marking a turning point under Golesh.
